I tried to show the group actions here by these photo's. Please check the links to the 2 webalbums there is a lot of individual jibe and race action.

Places could be gained and lost with good or bad buoy roundings. See a tight action below with 3 fighting for a better position in the field.

I personally like this photo, Ned 191 keeps almost full speed when changing course and flipping the sail during a jibe action around the buoy.

Luckely, I could join the race committee in the boat and so be closer to the surfers, which in-creases the chance of making sharp pictures. I shot over 800 pictures and I will up-load them all this week to the webalbum. See three nice pic's and a short video I made from the races.

The forecast looks excellent for some nice slalom heats in 17knots of wind this Sunday. Lets hope it will stay like this.
I will be there to make pictures and hopefully you will all be coming to do the final races for the year.

Oudorp LightHouse

Actullay I planned to makes some shots of the Freestyle match at the Schotsman. Unfortunately the event was cancelled due to a lack of participants.
So, I decided to have a look at Oudorp Beach next to the lighthouse. This spot seems to be more and more crowded now the Slufter beach is not available any longer.

I don't remember which heat this was but I think it is one of the heats after the break in the afternoon. Everybody with its big gear.

Grevelingenmeer Kabbelaarsbank, Sunday afternoon, time for one of the Regiocup Zuid series. The weather was excellent with a south westerly wind with an average of 15 knots and gusts of 18 knots. The sun was most of the time shining and the air temperature was around 17 degr. Celscius.
The race comittee decided for a down wind slalom series of four heats first. Three jibe marks before the finish.

Below a complete video of heat three. OK, there are a few less concentrated moments of the camera man but I hope you still enjoy it.

Keep an eye on the blog, I shot 400+ photos of the series and later this week these will be downloaded to the webalbum.

A small break for the french fries and nice frikandellen, thanks to the ladies for arranging this. Almost everybody with approx. 7 sqm for perhaps the last nice evening windsurfing session. Arnaud still trying to break Jacob's speed record. Marcel on formula. Looks like the world upside down.

I really wonder when Jacob is going to show his secretly practiced free-style moves.

Regio Cup Zuid 13 Sept 2009

Jacob our homie from the high North ahead of 181. His first race ever and 2 bullets in the silverfleet!! This says something of the level of windsurfing at the Zeedijk Haringvliet doesn't it? All the grey haired oldies.

Prity spectacular sight; the head of the goldfleet powering down to the jibe mark in the gusty Northerly wind. More then 25 windsurfers in the fleet. Looks like the fleet is growing which is a good thing for windsurfing here in the South part of Holland.

A the second Jib mark you can clearly see the fleet seperated.

This must be the youngest man of the fleet! Finishing first here in the silverfleet. Good job!!!!! Will this be our future Albeau???

Back from Spain

So, holidays in Spain were great to relax and rest. See picture of one of the guys at the camping site always there when there was wind. The plan for next year is to go a little bit more North near Roses to catch more wind. We found a nice camping in that area with a nice beach to go windsurfing.

Slalom windsurfing tips 0,7squad PART 2

As said, see now part 6-10 of the slalom / race Tips of the 0,7 squad:

6- The fin spins out:
Move mast foot forward: this reduces the pressure on your back foot that otherwise pushes your fin into a spin out!
Move your foot straps one hole forward, but bring back the mast foot by 1 cm: this decreases the pressure on the fin.
Use a 2 cm longer fin. It will hold more pressure from your legs.
Change the fin if you still have problems.

7- The nose of the board lifts up continuously?
Move the mast foot 1cm forward; The weight of the sail will keep the board down.
Lower the boom; This will help the sail to stay upright, more at a 90 degree angle to the board, and this allows less power, less lift which can be good to have in lighter winds, but not as the wind increases.
Decrease the fin length by 2 cm.
Release the downhaul by 2 cm; lesser loose leach will lower the trim of the board in stronger winds. It will offer more control in very strong winds.

8 – The board is glued to the water:
Move back the mast track. The nose of the board rises.
Raise the boom by 2cm: This creates more pressure through the legs on to the fin by keeping the board more on the rail, and the board nose rises.
Use a 2cm longer fin: A longer fin gives more lift and allows you to put more pressure on your legs.
Shortening the Harness Line will help in the same way as raising the boom height.

9 - Not able to close the gap between the sail and board?:
Move the mast foot forward. Closing the gap will become easier
Lower the boom. The boom has a shorter distance to travel in order to close the gap with the deck of the board.

10 – They are faster then you??:
Do you have a slalom board and sail? If you do then read the points from 1-9 very carefully and trim you gear.
Remember that slalom sailing is not just hanging into your harness and relaxing! You will need to be slightly overpowered and push the board to the limit without any fear.
Be ready to change your settings as the wind intensity changes.

Strong winds:
Longer harness lines, mast foot moves forward, smaller fin and lower boom.

Light winds:
Shorter harness lines, mast foot moves further back, longer fin and higher boom.
Find the right compromise in order to be the fastest one out there, and always try to keep some pressure on the back arm in order to have this extra power as an accelerator when needed.

Jacob in action!!

Since even Arnaud is now focussing on slalom racing I thought to blog these Slalom tips which I copied some time ago from the 0.7 windsurfsails site.

Ohhh, shit when I am back on my board everybody will fly away from me.

The first 5 of 10 Golden slalom Rules according to the 0.7 squad of 0.7 windsurf sails

Discover the hidden potential of your slalom equipment with 10 easy and practical golden rules!
Below are listed some of the most classical issues when sailing with slalom gear. Often this more technical gear does not allow us to feel comfortable and relaxed when surfing. Therefore we are now going to give you the answers to the most common problems. Give priority to modify the trim of the gear, starting with the first solution given. If this does not work, continue to the second listed advice and so on;

1-Sail has too much pressure on back arm:
Move the harness lines 2 cm backwards along the boom. The body weight will help you to better close the sail trough the harness lines.
Pull extra 2 cm outhaul. It eliminates the back hand power.

2 - The sail feels heavy:
Downhaul the sail an additional 2 cm. the sail will increase its loose leach and thereby allow the wind to exit the sail faster: better acceleration, and therefore lighter feeling sail.
Mast carbon percentage; a 30% Carbon mast is not very responsive and the sail becomes heavier.
Is the mast the original mast? If the mast has a wrong curve, to the one advised, the sail may feel unstable and heavier.
The IMCS does not represent the curve of the mast, but only the stiffness. This means that even if the IMCS is correct the curve could still be different, and give problems.
Using a size shorter mast than advised, combined to a long extension, will make the sail feel lighter, as the IMCS of the mast is lower by normally 2 points.

3 - The sail is unstable:
Release the sail by 2cm at the outhaul. It creates a deeper profile, and gives a better pressure point in the profile which equals stability.
Pull the tack strap by the mast foot tight, and tension the lower 4 battens of the sail.

4-Too much pressure on the back leg:
Lower the boom. The body moves forward and displaces the weight onto your front leg.
Lengthen your harness lines. It will be become easier to get to have a better grip in the front foot straps, and release pressure from behind.
Move your mast foot 1cm forward. This reduces the power on the back leg.

5- The foot exits from the front strap causing us to catapult:
Put the foot straps in the outer position on the board. The foot might have found a good stable point on the rail of the board, and the strap is too far inward to give a good lock in position. Therefore by bringing the strap closer to the foot will give further security whilst sailing.
Move mast foot forward; when doing this, your whole body moves forward and thereby bringing your front foot closer to the front foot straps.
Lower the boom. This again will bring your front foot forward as the whole body gets closer to the board. This also gives more control in high wind.

Friday's evening session

See above the way of a lost floating GPS. Jacob lost his during the session. Later in the evening we found it some kilometers further washed ashore. It didn't work any longer, some water entered but after a good drying session with his wife's hair dryer it worked again. Lots of luck involved.

Ok, agree, it took some time but Arnaud, usually into free style with small sails and stuff, finally bought a decent larger slalom set 7.0 and 105 L. He didn't regret it yet. So, his effective windrange has been extended now starting from 14 knots I guess with his weight.

Lets see what we can dow with the other guys. In the end they will be convinced. And as Marcel said board sailing versus windsurfing.

Unifiber Carbon boom

So, last weekend I was looking for a new boom to rig my North warp 7,3. After some small research @ surfspullen.nl forum, it became clear to me.....! According to the discussion the MS booms are the stiffest and good of quality, NP X9 booms are stiff but seem to have some quality issues with grip?! Still both these booms are pretty expensive like euro 800,- and up. Then I found a discussion regarding the quality of Unifiber booms. The smaller 2008 models didn't have a monocoque head and according to the guys on the forum this results in less stiffness. The 2009 models all have the monocoque and a thicker end piece tube. The boom looked quite nicely made as well.

The price however was almost half of the MS and NP, so I decided to give it a try.

Only thing missing now is time and wind to try it asap.

Windsurfing formula gear

Seems to get more and more used to sailing with big sails. Actually, I am starting to like it quite alot. Amazing how much wind you can deal with with these race sails and still stable. With the new 6-3 rule I understand that the new 2009 race sails even have a larger wind range.

Fastest I reached so far (peak measurement in a gust) is 46,18km/h with the formula set. Lets see how we can improve this.

Jacob and I bought these BGT-31 Gps's last winter. Just to see what speed we were actually having during our windsurf sessions. Fastest I achieved with the 125L Falcon is 54,3 km/h, Jacob already went over 55 with his Falcon 120l. This was during our surfing trip in Hyeres Almanarre with excellent conditions. It looks like it will be really difficult to break these speeds even when the conditions are good (flatwater alot of wind). This is what I found out two weeks ago with an approx 20knots wind behind a stone breakwater with the 7,6 redline and the 125L F.

I tried one of the guys 85l with 5.0m2 but with 98kg I am still not fitt for the job. Keep on practising.

Today we went to the Oostvoornsemeer to have a look at the bargians of the surfshop there. When we went out we saw this one die hard kite boarder in action in the gusty easterly wind with air temp of -1 celsius. That's the spirit!!!

J22 class; something of the past?

Is this the future of the J22 class in Holland? This owner really did a great job neglecting his boat at the Braasem. What a waste!!

Luckely there were still 34 active racing J22's last Sunday. And although the wind was pretty light, alot of people enjoyed racing that day.

Six J24's, 4 Maxfun's and 4 Laser SB3's had some fun as well.

A two boat training program for the NSR and Cowes week (they expect 120 boats) on this beautiful Sunday afternoon. Understood that boat lay-out is near to perfect, strict One Design, and is yellow the cheapest gennaker cloth in the class??

Competition for the good old J22 and Maxfun 25 class, lets see what Laser can do in the Netherlands. Ten boats expected at the NSR.

Grevelingen cup regatta had been cancelled due to strong winds (30 knots +). So, time to take some pics of the local windsurfing youth. I must admit to be dissappointed about my own pics. However see here the best of today.

Dutch Open A-cat, The beach

Yesterday the A-Cat Dutch Open started. More then 30 competitors from Spain, GBR, Switserland and ofcourse the Netherlands signed in for racing. This class seems to be hot and growing. Above a few pictures of some equipment on the beach, development all the way!!! Box rules make it happen. What about the costs? Perhaps we will learn about it this weekend.

16 and 17 of June the Dutch championship First 31.7 2007 were held. See below the nicest photo's I have made on Sunday the 17th. Unfortunately I missed Shoebox who decided not to sail the final race. They already had enough points, so brought the boat back home. Hope you like the pics.

Magic Marine at Van Uden Reco Cup

Not much pic's from the Van Uden Reco, but quite a good job from Viv. with these buoyroundings from X35 Magic Marine. These have been shot around 1400 hrs wit a light sea breeze of around 7 knots and excellent sunny weather conditions. Team Magic Marine going second around the leeward mark but finshes first this race and first overall. Hopefully next year there will be more X35's at the Van Uden Reco an excellent traing regatta before the North Sea Regatta in Scheveningen. Hope you like the pic's.

Last week Monday we visited Walvis Bay in Namibia for business. And next to excellent kite and wind surfing venue, we found out that this is the place to set speed records. Because of the steady unobstructed (desert) wind and smooth water (behind the sandy bank) There is a 1 mile race track which everybody is using to set the records. The Sailrocket guys from Australia are there with an odd looking speed machine. Unfortunately the track too far away to see the sailing. This picture was taken with a mobile phone, next time I bring my camera.

J22 regatta from Helius

Unfortunately there is only one big J22 event on the Haringvliet. The van Uden Reco Cup combined with IRC and ORC handicap classes. I found some pictures in the archive from 2004 of the J22 regatta held from Helius marina, Hellevoetsluis. A pity that this is only once per year in the South part of the Netherlands. Hopefully Van Uden Reco regatta will have a lot of participants enjoying racing on the Haringvliet.

Vorige week Zondag waren Kokkie met zijn Finnbuddies aan het trainen op het Haringvliet. Allemaal snelle "ready to race" Devoties op het water, een van deze bootjes kan wel een poetsbeurt gebruiken. Een keer raden van wie die is!!!!

Concentratie op de Soeiticheit vlak voor de boeironding

Hier een kleine compilatie van de winderwedstrijd afgelopen zondag. Ongeveer windkracht 6 zeer vlagerig en wat regenbuienmet veel wind. Zo te zien heeft iedereen hier "Lots of Fun". Eindelijk weer aan de touwen trekken in plaats van pielen.

Afgelopen zondag weer een winterwedstrijdje op het Haringvliet. Begonnen met heel weinig wind en geeindigt met heel weinig wind. Af en toe zon en heerlijk gezeild. Op de foto de Gekko (Benetau 25) en de Wasabi (J24).

Storm in Europe

A heavy Westerly storm 10 Bft. with gusts up to 110-120 km/h is chasing Europe. Destroying trees, buildings, etc. We found this sad sight in the marina. Unfortunately this was not the only one.

It is 24 ft and has a swing keel. The new Lutra 24, which is now under construction by one of my sailing buddies, will be racing at the Heineken Sint Maarten regatta 2007. More details will follow.

Volvo Ocean 2006 Rotterdam

Here are some nice pics taken form the Volvo Ocean inshore races just outside Hoek van Holland on the North Sea. Extremely busy with spectators boats and it looked we couldn't get close to make some nice pics. However Bert van de Velden sneeked out with his boat to the leeward mark. And here is the result. HAGOORT SAILS X-35 hits the water

Vanuit Muiderzand marina is het eerste trainings rondje gemaakt. Met een enthousiaste bemanning is de boot getest. Iedereen is zeer te spreken over het schip. De Hagoort Sails X-35, welke gestuurd wordt door Martin Baas, heeft als hoofdsponsor Magic Marine. De andere sponsors zijn: Tuned Rigs and Ropes, Silva/Nexus en ABN Amro.
